Classement QS 2012-2013 : seulement 4 universités françaises au top 200

La nouvelle édition du QS world university ranking 2012-2013 n'est, une fois encore, pas favorable pour la France qui compte seulement 4 établissements dans le top 200, présenté ci-dessous. Surtout, la grande majorité des universités de l’Hexagone recule de plusieurs places.
 
La 1re française, l’ENS Paris, cède une place, passant au 34e rang en 2012. De même, l’École polytechnique ParisTech perd 5 places (en 41e position), l’université  Pierre-et-Marie-Curie en perd 10 (129e position) et l’ENS Lyon se retrouve à la 153e position, soit un recul de 20 points sur l’édition 2011.

Seule l'université Paris-Diderot fait exception en passant de la 238e à la 234e place. Ceci dit, avec 35 universités françaises intégrant le top 700 (voir l'intégralité sur topuniversities.com), la France se trouve en 4e position derrière les États-Unis (130), le Royaume-Uni (55) et l’Allemagne (42).

Autre intérêt de ce classement : la publication pour chaque université, d’une fourchette des frais de scolarité. Une information qui permet de relever la place des établissements français, qui se retrouvent loin en tête des universités internationales, notamment anglo-saxonnes. À titre d’exemple, les quelques 40.000 $ du MIT (en tête du classement 2012) sont à comparer avec la quasi-gratuité de l’ENS Paris, 1re française. Cet élément n’est malheureusement pas un critère pris en compte dans la note globale.

Deux critères en recul
Selon Ben Sowter, directeur des recherches de QS, cette baisse de la performance des universités françaises reflète l’intensité de la compétition internationale. Parmi les universités qui rejoignent les 100 premières d'entre elles cette année, citons l’université de Zurich (de la 106e à la 90e place), la City University de Hong Kong (de la 110e à la 95e place), l’université de Pittsburg (de la 116e à la 98e) et la Erasmus University de Rotterdam (de la 103e à la 99e place).

Deux éléments expliquent notamment le recul des universités françaises : les moindres performances en termes de réputation (critère principal puisqu’il compte pour 40 % de la note globale. Voire la méthodologie sous le tableau ci-dessous) et en matière d’internationalisation (10 % de la note globale). Par exemple, et alors que les 100 premiers établissements voient une augmentation de leurs étudiants internationaux de 10 %, les établissements français sont en recul sur ce point (de 20 points pour l’ENS Lyon).

Une méthodologie qui privilégie la réputation

La méthodologie du classement QS comporte 6 critères, chacun ayant un poids différent.
- En tête, la réputation académique (qui compte pour 40 % de la note globale), établie à travers un questionnaire en ligne auprès de 46.000 universitaires. Ces derniers doivent citer les établissements les plus performants en matière de recherche dans leur domaine (mais ils ne peuvent citer leur propre université).
- La réputation auprès des employeurs représente seulement 10 % de la note globale. Là encore, il s’agit d’un questionnaire en ligne auprès d’employeurs devant citer les établissements formant les meilleurs diplômés.
- Le ratio étudiants/enseignants compte pour 20 %.
- Le nombre de citations par enseignant-chercheur compte également pour 20 % (le critère est établi à partir de la base de données Scorpus).
- Enfin, 2 critères ont été retenus pour l'international : 5 % pour le ratio d’enseignants internationaux et 5 % pour le ratio d’étudiants internationaux.
